Clasart Classic brings Gioachino Rossini's opera buffa IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA to cinemas live from the Met on May 31st

Gioachino Rossini's IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA is one of those wonderful operas where you go to the theater, hear beautiful music, and in the end, there is a happy ending! It is a masterpiece of opera buffa and a web of plots and intrigues, captivating with its lively music, fast-paced arias, and a humorous storyline.

This lightness and the comical twists are the main ingredients of "The Barber of Seville," which tells the story of Rosina, a young woman who, with the help of the barber Figaro, manages to free herself from the clutches of her guardian and land in the arms of her beloved Count Almaviva.

The superb cast is led by the fantastic Aigul Akhmetshina in the role of Rosina. She has one of the richest mezzo-soprano voices of our time and an impressive comedic talent. The clever Figaro is sung by the Moldovan baritone Andrey Zhilikhovsky with a voluminous and warm voice. The young tenor Jack Swanson, currently one of the most sought-after Rossini interpreters, is the third member of the trio as Count Almaviva in his signature role. As the pompous Dr. Bartolo, bass-baritone Peter Kálmán is convincing, both vocally and dramatically, and Alexander Winogradow is a cunning but amusing Don Basilio. His chilling "La calunnia è un venticello" leaves no doubt that words can be as deadly as any weapon. Giacomo Sagripanti is considered one of the most interesting Rossini conductors of our time. After the brilliant overture, he extracts a wonderfully fresh interpretation from Rossini's score, with expertly paced tempi, exquisitely articulated playing, and a broad dynamic range that gives this BARBER a particularly cheerful and effervescent sound.

Bartlett Sher's famous production combines the captivating score with uproarious staging. His stage directions are peppered with gags that complement the humor of the libretto. Catherine Zuber's colorful costumes, including an absurdly large hat for Don Basilio, also contribute to the merriment. A catwalk that runs around the orchestra pit brings the action closer to the audience.
