Clasart Classic brings Umberto Giordano's veristic masterpiece ANDREA CHÉNIER live from the Met to cinemas on 13 December

On December 13, MET LIVE IM KINO presents one of Umberto Giordano's best-known works. Premiered at La Scala in Milan in 1896, ANDREA CHÉNIER was a great success for the composer, who set his opera against the backdrop of the turmoil of the French Revolution in and around Paris, creating an operatic monument to the murdered poet Chénier.

During the Reign of Terror under the Jacobins, the idealistic poet Andrea Chénier falls in love with the noblewoman Maddalena di Coigny. Gérard, formerly a servant in the Coigny household and now risen to powerful revolutionary, is himself in love with Maddalena and uses his position to plot against Chénier. Despite Maddalena's desperate attempts to save Chénier's life, he is sentenced to death. Out of love for him, Maddalena decides to go to the scaffold together with him.

This stirring opera drama captivates with its dramatic power and gripping musical language. Nevertheless, ANDREA CHÉNIER rarely appears on performance schedules, as only few singers can meet the high demands of this work. Three artists are needed who must deliver extraordinary achievements both vocally and dramatically to credibly convey the complex characters and the rousing emotions.

The title role ranks among the most demanding tenor roles in the opera repertoire, which audience favorite Piotr Beczała, one of the most elegant and captivating tenors in the world, masters convincingly. Sonya Yoncheva is a glamorous Maddalena with a fantastic variety of vocal colors, whose silvery shimmering soprano floats effortlessly through the opera house. As Chénier's adversary Carlo Gérard, Igor Golovatenko thrills with captivating stage presence and a powerful yet warmly timbred baritone.

Director Nicolas Joël has created a historically grounded, monumental and moving production for this drama. The costumes and the towering hairstyles of the ladies reflect the decadence of the Ancien Régime. At the podium is principal guest conductor Daniele Rustioni, who brings this veristic opera jewel to brilliant life with great devotion. Under his direction, the Met Orchestra sounds simply sensational with perfectly balanced tempi.
