Yuval Sharon, hailed by the New York Times as "the most visionary opera director of his generation," directs the long-awaited new production of Richard Wagner's TRISTAN UND ISOLDE. On 21 March 2026, this epochal monumental work comes to cinemas live.
The story of TRISTAN UND ISOLDE is one of the best-known medieval legends: Tristan is tasked with bringing Isolde from Ireland to Cornwall as a bride for his uncle, King Marke. During the voyage, both accidentally drink a love potion and fall into an immortal but forbidden love that ends with their deaths. Richard Wagner created a music drama from this tale, which premiered in Munich in 1865 and became famous not least for the "Tristan chord" and the "Liebestod."
Two electrifying stars take on the title roles: Lise Davidsen and Michael Spyres. Lise Davidsen returned to the stage in mid-January following maternity leave for her debut as Isolde at the Gran Teatre del Liceu (Barcelona), where both audience and critics responded with frenzied acclaim. As the only baritenor of our time, American Michael Spyres has achieved cult status. After sparking storms of enthusiasm as Siegmund and Stolzing in Bayreuth, he makes his role debut as Tristan in March. Mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova appears in her signature role as Brangäne, bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny takes on the part of the faithful Kurwenal, and Ryan Speedo Green is the forgiving King Marke. On the podium is the Met's charismatic music director, Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
The spectacular set designs are by British artist Es Devlin, known for her large-scale, performative sculptures and settings that combine light, music, and language.
