Giacomo Puccini's LA BOHÈME is the most performed opera in the history of the Met. On November 8th, the opera can be seen live in cinemas in Franco Zeffirelli's elaborate and timeless production.
LA BOHÈME is set in Paris's artist quarter of the 1830s and tells the tragic love story between the penniless poet Rodolfo and the tubercular Mimi. Together with their friends, they live the typical bohemian life - poor, but full of dreams and passion.
Lyrical and touchingly beautiful, Puccini's score exerts an irresistible attraction. Many of the memorable melodies and masterful orchestration generate great emotions in the audience. The opera combines Italian melody with French charm and creates a total work of art of imperishable beauty.
The first-class ensemble is led by rising young stars Juliana Grigoryan and Freddie De Tommaso as Mimì and Rodolfo, who prove to be the very first choice. Also making a great impression are Heidi Stober as Musetta and Lucas Meachem as her on-off lover Marcello. At the podium of the magnificently performing Met Orchestra stands conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson.
Franco Zeffirelli's iconic 1981 production makes full use of the opera house's immense resources. The stage is populated by hundreds of chorus members and extras - even a donkey, an absolute audience favorite, cannot be missing! Since its creation, there has been frantic applause when the curtain rises for the Café Momus in the second act.
